What was I worried about at the start? I did not want a big charge on my card at once. I travel alone and my budget is tight. Why did I still feel this booking was five star for me even after the problem with money I met at the counter I booked the car through QEEQ and online it looked very simple I already bought AXA Full Coverage before the trip so I thought I did not need anything extra from the counter I picked up the car around the morning of December twenty eighth at the Avis counter in Los Angeles I was going to get a Kia Soul The staff gave me a bunch of papers He talked fast and I kept saying I already have insurance I do not need more from you He nodded and said okay The line behind me was long I felt a bit nervous The contract was all in English I signed it pretty fast I just wanted to get the car and leave I thought it should be fine Later when I checked my credit card bill I saw one more charge It was more than one hundred dollars I stared at the screen for a while What is this I looked again and I started to think maybe the counter added extra insurance even after I said no I felt angry and also lost I took screenshots of everything and then I contacted the customer service of the platform From here the whole thing became like a question and answer between me and them They asked me first if I got any contract from the counter I answered that I did not I only had the payment slip I asked them too can we still do something if I have no contract They told me they could try and asked me to send all the papers I had including the bank bill I went to sort all the images and sent them I was worried it would be useless but still I tried Later they asked again how much extra I was charged and on which day I checked my bill again and told them it was about one hundred twenty five dollars for extra insurance I was afraid the car rental company would just say you signed it so it is your fault Some time later they came back to me and said the rental company showed a contract with my signature on it The company said the charge was correct and they did not want to give any refund When I heard that I felt really down I thought maybe I just have to take this loss I asked them is there any other way Is this the end They did not just brush me off They explained they would still try to talk with the company again They asked more details like did I clearly tell the counter I did not want insurance and did I say it more than once They also told me that the head office of the rental company was not at the scene so they only look at the contract and bills They said they would try to speak for me and talk about the language problem and how I could not fully understand the contract One thing I remember well is that in one email they told me clearly that they were not sure about the result but they would keep trying I felt complicated I knew I might not get the money back but I also felt I was not alone when dealing with this big company During this time almost every time I had a new question and sent it out someone from customer service wrote back to me pretty fast They told me which step it was on and if there was any new reply from the rental company They were not like some other places that say we are working on it and then disappear They kept me updated in a clear way They asked for documents they checked them they passed my points to the company and then shared the answer with me I really felt someone was on my side In the end the rental company still refused to return the money They said the contract was valid and I should have asked the counter to change it when I was there As a foreigner this was very hard for me There was no Korean or easier version of the paper and I already told the staff two times that I did not want extra insurance They still added it This made me feel very powerless In this situation I started to really feel what one to one support means It was not cold standard answers It was someone who looked carefully at my bills and screenshots Someone who helped me say things in a clear way to the rental company Every time I asked is there still a chance or is this case over they gave me a simple and direct answer They told me the problem was that the rental company was too strict not that I reported it wrong The result was not perfect for me I did not get my extra money back But when I look back from the day I found the strange charge to the day the case was closed I do not feel I was left alone I remember standing at the sunny lot in Los Angeles with the keys of the Kia Soul in my hand Now when I think of this trip I also remember that during this hard moment there was always someone from customer service following my case and helping me step by step This feeling of being cared for and answered fast was very real for me as a young traveler even if the money did not come back
